And into China, and the end of the trans-sib

After the previous text heavy post, here’s a picture heavy one! The ride from UB to Beijing was completed in about 28 hours. We were in second class and shared the compartment with an Argentinian girl and an Italian guy who were pretty good company.

The scenery was again something to behold, and as mentioned before, we both recommend the Irkutsk-UB-Beijing leg, and think it is far more interesting than the Moscow-Irkutsk leg.

Our 2nd class cabin. Quite similar to the previous one, but blue-er

Bye UB!

The last few steppes, before we headed out into semi-arid territory

Getting less green, gradually

The Mongolian restaurant car. SO much better than the Russian one! (both in terms of food, and the ‘ambiance’)

The Gobi approacheth

Spent quite a while staring out of windows

It rained! In the desert! We saw a rainbow!

Before the train from Mongolia entered China, its undercarriage needed to be changed given that the widths of the tracks are different in both countries.

You could choose to remain seated in the carriage while they hoisted it up and changed the wheels. Neat!

The Chinese Restaurant car. Very business like

With the Gobi behind us, we gradually started passing through greener areas in China
