Days out in Riga (Latvia)

Ok this post is going to be a shorter one, because we have already written the post about travelling from Riga to Moscow, and our posts are sort of getting backed up. It’s also a little hard to keep cities straight, and write stuff about each one, when (after a day of walking) we’d just like to grab dinner and chill out. So for this post, I am just going to put up a bunch of pictures and captions.

Riga has a population of around .7M, so again, is a small-ish, compact city. Most stuff to see (historical, churches, cafes, pubs) tend to be in the Old town (a central district). We spent most of our time here, but also checked out some of the larger malls slightly further out.

The view from our balcony. A view like this? Once in a blue moon.

After 10 days on the road, it’s time for laundry, because we’re running out of clean “socks”

Cat hostel story: The city generally decided that they preferred cats to rats. Which is why people tend to feed cats around the city, and at least one such ‘cat hostel’ has sprung up.

The sights and sounds (and smells) of the Central market

Sights and sounds, and did I mention smells?? Lot of fermented, pickled, and other misc vegetables on display

Riga is famous for its old wooden houses outside the old town. The reason for this is that every time the city was under attack, anything outside of old town could just be burnt. People would move into old town, which was built from stone and protected by high walls and a moat. This burning down has happened more than a few times!

Said moat.

Minioni

Better than magnum! This had two layers of chocolate coating, with peanut butter between these two layers, and then the regular vanilla center.

Affordable local fare. Pelmeni is a local dumpling that is a little like if a ravioli married a gyoza I guess?

Cili Pica was our savior. Whenever we needed some good ol pizza, pasta, burgers and western fare, Cili Pica delivered. (quite literally – we also ordered delivery to our hotel room once 😉

YES! When we tired of walking around historical sites, we also managed to catch Skudrcliveks and Ne/Sevi. Better known to y’all as Ant-Man and Self/Less
